Volunteer Orientation Day - Feb 4

Dear Mom and Dad, I am writing this letter because they said I would not get supper if I did not. Camp is great. My counselor's name is Greg, he is very nice. The kids in my group are Buzz, Helen, Wendy, Casey, and 1 or 2 more who have not shown up yet ...  Ha Ha, almost felt like my first day of camp when I was a kid.

Orientation Day Today, 2 hours of info re: how to get onto the venue each day, what security processes there are, what to bring and not bring, what to do and not do, who to call for what and when, etc., etc. A few interesting facts: Total number of people that are part of the work force for the alpine ski events = 2400, second largest work force of all Olympic events. Apparently 71 countries participating in alpine ski events (seems surprising, how many of you can even name that many, and how many even know what snow is?!). Total number of meals to be prepared just to feed volunteers for alpine skiing = 70,000.

Sort of felt like being at a private school at an assembly: everyone wearing the same thing, listening attentively (sort of). Incredible amount of time, planning, organization, with people there having been working at this full time for 4-5 yearws or more, from macro to micro management issues.

And what was supposed to be a day of orientation on the hill was actually a first day of work. Lots of netting to put up, other nets to move around, etc. Also planning important things: e.g. Once security is fully established at entry to venue, no liquids will be permitted across entry (like airports), so everyone who likes to have something to keep them warm on the mountain (spelled E-t-O-H) has to bring it up in next 2 days, and fine a place on the hill to stash it!

Lousy pics today as I forgot my camera, these were taken with my iPhone. Camera already packed for tomorrow. Notice how easy it is to tell each person from the other based on what they are wearing!!

Gerry and Helen after we changed dingleberries that were incorrectly attached to A-netting just 2 days before! More on dingleberries tomorrow when I have a better picture to show you.

View looking down TOILET BOWL, the first section we look after. It is much steeper than it looks. By day's end, the area near the 3 tiny people was already lined with 3 rows of B-netting.
